There is a clear negative correlation between the amount of money someone earns and how much they enjoy their job. In other words, if you love your job, you’re probably not making six figures; and if you’re making six figures, you probably want to kill yourself during the workday. Here are a few professions that provide evidence to this theory:
Little Money, Great Enjoyment:
Artists/Musicians
Writers/Novelists
Teachers
Researchers
Philosophers
Non-Profit Organization Employees
Paramedics
Little Enjoyment, Great Money:
Auditors
IT Professionals
Engineers
Pharmacists
Patent Lawyers
Anything in Sales
Basically, our society has developed in such a way that we can now raise our children with cynical ambitions and discouragement of creativity. “That’s a nice painting Bobby, but is painting going to make you any money? I didn’t think so. Now go practice reading your financial statements.” If we keep up the pace, we’ll pretty much turn into North Korea; where the arts are only permitted if they encourage communism. Our version would be a little different. Just replace communism with capitalism.
Even those of us who didn’t grow up with money (and know very well that it’s possible to survive comfortably with a limited budget) have had the concept drilled into our brains: no one likes their job, so stop whining and be happy when that paycheck comes. I wonder what the world would be like if everyone got paid the same, regardless of profession. I imagine it to be a world with great music, art, literature, and ideas; but with crumbling housing, food shortages, sick people, and poor money management. Not so ideal. And perhaps, people wouldn’t be as happy as I’d like to believe. Nevertheless, we have a crap load of people out there dragging their feet into the office each day, dealing with road rage because of endless traffic, and being so depressed when they get home from work, that they can’t even enjoy that paycheck in the first place. When will we be content with average salaries?
